Rather glossy olive brown and steel with lighter brown toning on the highpoints. The planchet is mostly smooth but there are some tiny planchet flakes in the field behind the head and more in the fields on the reverse. Specks of greenish verdigris can be found at the bottom of the obverse; otherwise there are no marks or other defects. The date and legends are strong except where die failure has weakened the details. Late die state with obvious die failure from the face to RI and in the opposing area at the legs of the seated figure. A nice example in a neat die state, possibly in the condition census. The comparable Perkins and Ford examples suffer from significant planchet flaws, and the better Taylor piece (lot 2364) actually is a misattributed M.5.5-M. Weight 104.9 grains.

Ex Tony Terranova.
